The second largest religious denomination in Kazakhstan is Orthodox Christianity.
In every major city of the country, alongside a large mosque, there is also a significant Orthodox church or cathedral, often of similar height. The Holy Dormition Cathedral serves as a central hub for the Orthodox community of Kazakhstan.
The cathedral houses four unique relics: a fragment of the relics of Saint Andrew the First-Called, fragments of relics of the holy saints from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, an icon with a relic of Saint Alexander of Svir, an icon of Saint Mary of Egypt, and the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, gifted by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The interior of the cathedral is painted by artists from the Russian village of Palekh, famous for its iconography.
The Synod of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan and the Cyril and Methodius Spiritual and Cultural Center are based at the Cathedral.
