The Museum and Memorial Complex of Victims of Political Repressions and Totalitarianism “ALZHIR” (Akmola Camp for the Wives of Traitors to the Motherland) is located near the city of Astana, in the village of Akmol. It was opened on May 31, 2007, the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repressions. The complex was created in memory of thousands of women unjustly convicted and exiled to this camp during the years of Stalinist repressions.
The museum displays documentary materials, personal belongings of prisoners, photographs, letters, and archival records that reveal the tragic destinies of the camp’s inmates. The exhibition conveys the atmosphere of suffering, courage, and faith of these women, many of whom were wives, mothers, and daughters of prominent figures labeled as “enemies of the people.”
On the territory of the complex are memorial structures: a wall of remembrance, sculptural compositions, and alleys dedicated to the prisoners of “ALZHIR.” The museum serves as an important reminder of the value of human rights, freedom, and historical memory, calling for awareness of the consequences of totalitarianism and the need to preserve peace and justice.
