K. Kuanyshbayev State Academic Kazakh Music and Drama Theatre
On November 15, 1991, the K. Kuanyshbayev State Academic Kazakh Music and Drama Theatre in Astana raised its curtain for the first time with G. Musrepov’s tragedy “Aqan Seri – Aktokty.” The premiere was directed by the talented founder of the theatre, Zhakyp Omarov. The theatre earned its first award in 1996 at the “Tuganlyk” International Theatre Festival in Ufa among Turkic-speaking countries.
This sacred Shanyrak, symbolizing the nation’s spiritual essence, was led by remarkable figures of Kazakh art such as Zhakyp Omarov, Kadyr Zhetpisbayev, and Azerbaijan Mambetov — People’s Artist of the USSR and Khalyk Kaharmany (“National Hero”).
The theatre’s repertoire is constantly renewed, enriched with both national and world drama. Through its participation in numerous theatre festivals in Kazakhstan and abroad, the collective remains devoted to reviving Kazakh theatrical art and showcasing the cultural heritage of the past and present through the power of performance.
On December 14, 2011, the theatre was granted the title of “State Academic Theatre.” This year, the K. Kuanyshbayev Theatre — a peer of Kazakhstan’s independence — celebrates its 30th anniversary.
In 2020, by the initiative of the First President of Kazakhstan, Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, and with the support of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, a new theatre building was constructed, becoming a true architectural jewel of the capital and a testament to the state’s commitment to culture and the arts.
